The Saudi Science Team won a bronze medal at the 21st International Junior Science Olympiad, held in Bucharest, Romania, from this December 02nd to 11th, with the participation of 303 students representing 52 countries.
The medal was awarded to Maryam Osama Turkistani, a student from the Makkah Education Department, bringing the Kingdom’s total to 28 international medals in IJSO history — including 1 gold, 3 silver, and 24 bronze.
This year’s Saudi Team consisted of six students and several supervisors, participating under the strategic partnership of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) and the Ministry of Education, with sponsorship from Elm Company.
The IJSO is an annual international competition, held both individually and in teams, in the field of natural sciences for students under the age of 16 as of December 31 of the competition year.
Each participating country fields a team of six students, who compete in three types of exams: multiple-choice, theoretical extended response, and a hands-on practical test, spanning physics, chemistry, and biology.
Notably, this year marks the Kingdom’s eighth journey to the IJSO — a global competition that first launched in Indonesia in 2004.
